What Happens After You Call

You call 1-510-229-3331 and tell us what the door is doing - won't open, slams down, makes a grinding noise, whatever it is. We ask a few questions about the door's age and what kind of opener and springs it has, because a lot of houses around here still run original hardware from whenever the place was built. Most homes in the service area went up somewhere between 1938 and 2005, with the typical house dating to 1965, and that matters for what parts we bring.

We work out of 1926 Park St, Alameda, CA 94501, so if you want to drop by instead of calling, that's the address. On the call we'll give you a rough idea of what the job involves and what it might run, based on what you describe - we don't quote a firm price sight unseen, because a torsion spring job and a full opener swap are not the same visit.

One honest limitation: if the problem turns out to be something we can't diagnose over the phone, we tell you that up front rather than guessing at a price. We'd rather get it right on-site than promise something we can't back up by phone.

The area

What We Do Not Take On

We work on residential garage doors, torsion and extension springs, openers, tracks, rollers, cables, and panels. That's the scope, and it's a deliberate one.

We don't take on commercial roll-up doors, warehouse-grade equipment, or anything built for an industrial bay rather than a house. If your door is part of a larger gate or fence system, that's outside what we do too - we work on the garage door itself, not perimeter security.

We also won't tell you a repair makes sense when it doesn't. Alameda's housing stock runs mostly 1960s and 70s construction across the area, and on some of those older single-panel doors, the track and hardware are discontinued enough that patching one part just means the next part fails in six months. At that point we'll say so and talk through full replacement instead of nickel-and-diming a door that's done. We're not going to sell you a part we don't think will hold.

What we find

Where We Work

We run out of the shop at 1926 Park St in Alameda and cover the surrounding area, including the neighborhoods closest to us - West Alameda and West End, both about two miles northwest of the shop.

Farther out, we reach Piedmont and San Leandro, each about six miles away, Emeryville around seven miles, and Brisbane, San Lorenzo, and Ashland at roughly eight miles. We also get calls from South San Francisco, Cherryland, Moraga, Albany, Orinda, Castro Valley, and Kensington in the nine-to-eleven mile range, and as far as Colma, Burlingame, Foster City, San Bruno, El Cerrito, Millbrae, Fairview, Lafayette, Hillsborough, Belvedere, Norris Canyon, Tiburon, Sausalito, Pacifica, Alamo, Belmont, and San Miguel.

The service area covers 385,472 households and 172,438 owner-occupied houses, which is a lot of ground and a lot of different door ages - some newer builds, some original hardware from the 1960s. If you're not sure whether your address falls inside our reach, call the shop and ask; we'd rather tell you straight than waste your afternoon.

Questions

Common questions

Do you work on garage door openers or just the door itself?

Both. Openers, tracks, rollers, cables, springs, and panels are all part of what we handle on a residential garage door. If the opener motor runs but the door won't move, or the door moves fine but the remote's dead, either one is a normal call for us.

How do I know if my spring is broken versus my opener?

If the door won't budge and feels heavy when you try to lift it by hand with the opener disconnected, that's usually a spring. If the opener hums or clicks but nothing moves, it's more likely the opener or a stripped gear inside it. Tell us which one on the phone and we'll bring the right parts.

Do you serve areas outside Alameda itself?

Yes. We cover a wide stretch of the surrounding area, from close-in spots like West Alameda out to places eight, ten, even fifteen miles from the shop. Call and give us your address and we'll tell you straight away whether it's in range.

My house is from the 1960s - will you even have parts for my door?

Often yes, but not always. A lot of houses in the area date to right around 1965, and original torsion hardware on those doors sometimes uses sizes nobody stocks anymore. We'll tell you on-site if a part's obsolete and what the realistic options are instead of forcing a fix that won't last.
